“Hotrod” Jon Gambutti Returns to ATQMRA Victory Lane at Wall Stadium
July 24th 2010 Wall Stadium
Hotrod Jon Gambutti has been away from TQ midget racing for a few years. In only his third race in a TQ midget since the end of the 2006 season Gambutti took the Colin Martin Spitfire Development 36 to Victory Lane at Wall Stadium. Next up for the ATQMRA is Sundance Vacation Speedway on Saturday July 31st followed by the Double Feature Johnny Coy Sr. Memorial Race at Mahoning Valley Speedway on August 7th
Gambutti methodically picked his way from his tenth starting position to overtake race long leader Austin Fehr on the 17th lap of the 25 lapper to record the victory.
Austin Fehr and Dan Lane brought the Winged TQ midgets to the green flag of Kyle McGowan with Tidaback moving into the lead followed by Fehr. Not satisfied running second Fehr quickly dispatched Tidaback and took the lead on the second lap and started opening up a lead.
In the mean time Gambutti was making his charge to the front. Romit Memorial race winner Robin Johnston moved into the fifth position. The pack was tightened up as a result of a spinning Steve Craig. A lap after the restart Johnston and Tim Proctor had simultaneous unrelated crashes with Johnston’s car bouncing off the back straight away wall and sliding to a rest on its left side at the entry to the third turn. Both drivers walked away from their mounts disappointed, but unhurt.
Following a restart for a spinning Don Adams Gambutti used the outside line to move around Tidaback to take second and put the Fehr 73 in his sights moving to the low side entering the third turn to take the lead and never look back. Fehr took second with Mike Tidaback third, Paul Lotier Jr. came home fourth with Ian Cumens fifth. The Rookie of the race Josh Dalrymple crossed the line 6th. Alison Cumens earned the Brice’s NAPA Case of Oil with her 7th place finish. Matt Roselli, Jeff Kot and Joe Lord Jr. rounded out the top ten.
Heat Races were won by Tidaback and Gambutti.
ATQMRA News and Notes: Next up for the ATQMRA is Sundance Vacation Speedway on Saturday July 31st followed by the Double Feature Johnny Coy Sr. Memorial Race at Mahoning Valley Speedway on August 7th. Following the race Gambutti was elated to finally get back to victory lane. His last win was at Wall Stadium at the season ending Turkey Derby following the 2005 season. ARDC Midget Standout Trevor Kobylarz has been making steady improvements in his time behind the wheel of the Lou Cicconi owned 48 Dart Chassis and continues to split time between the Midget and gaining valuable pavement experience in the Winged TQ. Don Adams made his first start in a car with a long history when he purchased the 15 car from Art Lawshie.
