Ian Cumens Wins Sundance ATQMRA Feature

Vaulting to the Points Lead

Heat Race Winners Frank Fischer in the 26 Spitfire and Matt Janisch in the Bruce's Pro-Car 48

The racing at Sundance on this day saw a change at the top of the ATQMRA point’s standings. Ian Cumens charged to the lead on lap 18 to record the feature event victory. Heat races were won by Frank Fischer and Matt Janisch. Next up for the ATQMRA is the Johnny Coy Sr. Memorial race at Mahoning Valley Speedway for a double header of 20 lap features.

The feature saw the front row of Matt Janisch and Chad Jones take the green with Janisch getting the jump after a dominant win in his heat race. A lap 2 caution for point leader Paul Lotier Jr. slowed the action and ended Lotier’s night with a broken rear. On the restart Janisch once again took the lead and began to put distance between himself and second place Frank Fischer.

Lap 13 was an unlucky lap for several competitors when a caution was thrown for a coasting Jeff Kot the field was tightened up. Janisch moved back out front on the restart but a broken bolt in the front suspension ended his day before a lap was complete. Lap 13 also saw Rookie of the Year Contender and 600 Micro Sprint Standout Joe Lord Jr. fall from competition.

Frank Fischer inherited the lead on the restart but his time at the point was short lived when his right rear tire started to go down allowing perennial front runner Robin Johnston to take the lead going down the backstretch. Hot on his tail was the Cumens Duo of Ian and Alison in their white Spitfires. Ian applied pressure and made the decisive move to take the lead on lap 18 with an inside pass coming off turn 4. Johnston finished was the meat in the Cumens sandwich finishing second with Alison third. Austin Fehr made an impressive run to finish fourth with top Rookie of the year point man Josh Dalrymple pulling down his first top five.

The uncharacteristic DNF for Lotier Jr. in the Boyd Racing 1B and subsequent win by Ian Cumens saw a swap at the top of the point’s standings. Johnston moved into second moving Lotier to third with reigning driving champion Alison Cumens fourth and Janisch fifth.

Heat Races were won by Frank Fischer and Matt Janisch.

ATQMRA News and Notes: The race saw JP Cossman’s first trip to the Pa. oval since it was last called Evergreen in the Shadow built car that won numerous races with Don Adams at the wheel. Josh Dalrymple was trying for his second win of the weekend after winning the West End Fair Nationals Qualifier in his 600 Wingless Micro Sprint at Borger’s Speedway on Friday night. Chad Jones in the Jones Racing Products 35 brought a strong contingent of help to the track packing the pits with his ten member crew. The ATQMRA Summer Membership meeting is scheduled for August 25th from 7 pm to 10pm at the Bethlehem Comfort Inn.
